Of his many interests, Ashton singled out the "purpose of assisting people to become more perfectly loving" to be the principal purpose of the AWCT.
These instructions have been formalised into the AWCT Objectives.
Auckland String Quartet Summer School
The Auckland String Quartet Summer School ASQSS was launched in 1984 by the Auckland String Quartet. The summer school features a series of wonderful guest tutors. In 2011, the Tutors were Dianna Cochrane, William Hanfling, Christine Bowie and David Garner. Through the AWCT the ASQSS is able to offer scholarships to 8 young musicians to attend the school and share the wonderful experience with others ranging in age from 16 to 76.
